Straw becomes valuable product in central province - travel to Nghe An

Rice straw, often just used as kindling or even burned after harvest, is becoming a hot commodity at Con Market in Thanh Chuong District, Nghe An Province.
A local attributed the seemingly spontaneous establishment of the marketplace to last year’s bad weather and a subsequent shortage of straw to feed cows in the district.

Another reason for its new popularity is because it is easily transportable. Vendors, most of them farm women, need only their bicycle to bring their product to market, where they sell the straw to other farmers.

This is behind one of the Con Market’s most distinct features: it’s mobile. Every morning, bicycles weave through the streets as the vendors call out their wares. The marketplaces goes wherever the women do.

The market has about 100 sellers. A vendor named Lan said her family had 2,500sq.m of farmland and only one cow, so she sells excess straw to make ends meet.

Lan got the idea to sell straw from her neighbours. Every day she gets up early to tie a 10 kg bundle of straw and travel 15 km to market. She sells it for VND35,000 (US$2).
