Toys will no longer only appear in the dreams of poor children in Hoa binh thanks to a special visit to the province today.
A collection of toys and some of the artisans who made them are heading to the Muong Khen Primary School, Tan Lac District in the northern province of Hoa binh The objects will be part of a special four-day exhibit before they are offered to this primary school and also to the province's Quy My kindergarten.
According to the organising committee, the show is intended as a gift to underprivileged and ethic minority children on the occasion, of the International Children's Day on June 1. The show will give children in the rural and mountainous region a chance to play, while helping to preserve traditional toys and support the craft villages who make them.
The collection will include traditional toys such as to he (toy figurines) made by artisans from Xuan La Village, Phu Xuyen District, Ha tay Province and singing kites made by artisans of Ba Duong Noi village. Hong Ha Commune, Dan Phuong District, Ha tay Province.
A wooden seesaw, a swing, bamboo dolls, stuffed animals, cars, bicycles, and a special collection of toy vehicles will also be a part of the exhibit.
To help further preserve traditional toys, the artisans will also teach children and their parents how to make simple toys. Children will have a chance to show off their creativity and skills by forming terra-cotta, painting and colouring, and cutting and pasting paintings.
The children will also take part in community games such as bit mat bat de (blind-man's-bluff) and keo co (tug-of-war). A discussion following the launch of the exhibit will take place on Sunday at 7pm with parent representatives, teachers and children.
Organisers are hoping the show will raise awareness of the importance of playing in child development, saying that for children, playing is also learning where toys are the textbooks.
The exhibition is being organised by the Centre for Assistance for Poor and Disabled Children (Cenforchil). It opened at 8am today and run until next Monday.
